Ilayaraja & Thiruvasakam Controversy

medium_thiruvasagam-02.jpgEveryone is writing about Ilayaja's Thiruvasagam on net. People like Gnani, Charu are publishing rubbish arguements. So I am writing some of my views.

1. Argument: Ilayaraja said in outlook magazine..."BobMarlin ( Buffalo Soldier Fame ), Bob Dylan, Pavalar Varadharajan are Kuppaikal!".

My words: He is a great musician but not a great thinker. Sometimes he speaks too much.... forgive him!

2. Argument: He composed his own music and then he has choosen lines from Thiruvaasakam".

My words: What is the difficulty in accepting this. Music is his own. He can not change the lines of Thiruvasakam if it is not coming well with music! Is it a crime?! Sample of ignorance! More will be exposed in coming points.

3.Argument: It is not Symphony but Oratorio!!

My words: They rightly said it. It is an Oratorio Composing plyaed by a symphony archestra!! But Gnani ( a Muttal in Music?) argued that "Even Veeramani and Iyappan songs can be called as an Oratorio"!! Now let us see what is the form Oratorio...

An oratorio is a large musical composition for orchestra, vocal soloists and chorus. It differs from an opera in that it does not have scenery, costumes, or acting. Oratorios usually contain:

a. An overture (French ouverture, meaning opening, in music, the instrumental introduction to a dramatic, choral, or, occasionally, instrumental composition.)

b. Various arias [(Italian for air; plural: arie or arias in common usage) in music was originally any expressive melody, usually, but not always, performed by a singer. It is now used almost exclusively to describe a self contained piece for one voice usually with orchestral accompaniment., sung by the vocal soloists ]

c. Ensemble singing

d. Recitative, usually employed to advance the plot

e. Choruses, often monumental and meant to convey a sense of glory. Frequently the instruments for oratorio choruses include timpani and trumpets.

Do you think that Iyaapa Songs or LR Eeswari songs has got the above features so that they can be called as Oratorio?!! Foolishness at its peak... arguments just to get cheap Publicity. Why Charu put Gnanis work.. again to get cheap publicity... but you poor ignorant guys are exposing your own ignorance easily.

4.Argument: He called it as crossover... but people like MP Srinivasan has done this already

My words: Ilayaraja never said that no one has ever done a cross over! Irrelevent issue here.

5.Argument: To do this he dont need an Orchestra from Hungary.. our chennai cine musicians can do it.

My words: I dont think that our cine people can do it... but Ilayaraja has choosen the best! See more details about them below. The Symphony Orchestra of the Hungarian Radio and Television also known world-wide as the Budapest Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1943 by Ernst von Dohnányi. During the 57 years of its existence the orchestra has proved itself being one of the most reputed ensembles of the world, highly valued by innumerable reviews of the critics of the greatest newspapers (ie.e. Daily Telegraph, New York Times etc.) and the public throughout the world. The principal conductors of the orchestra: Ernst von Dohnányi (1943), János Ferencsik (1945), Tibor Polgár (1945), László Somogyi (1951), György Lehel (1956). András Ligeti (1989). Since 1993 the Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Orchestra is Tamás Vásáry, the world-famous conductor and pianist. The list of first-class conductors performing with the orchestra is an endless one, containing names like Otto Klemperer, Carlo Zecchi, István Kertész, Aldo Ceccato, Peter Eötvös, Claudio Abbado, Lamberto Gardelli, Antal Doráti, Sir George Solti, Sir John Barbirolli, Leopold Stokowski and others. I dont know why gnani has shown his vayitherichal?? Mudiyiruppaval Kondai Podivaal!! Our Tamil cinema directors are going to an irreleven location in Europe for simple song number... but when Ilayaraja has choosen a right place these dogs are parking loudly!! What is the result... Chennai online writes... Another global celebrity who has singled out Ilayaraja's work is Oscar award winner, Stephen Schwartz, America's most celebrated opera play writer, who has written a letter to Fr Jaspar about 'Thiruvaasagam in Symphony': "Last night, at Sony studios in New York City, I had the pleasure of hearing the almost finished mix of Ilayaraaja's amazing work. It is unlike anything I've ever heard before, a stunning blend of Indian and western music and instruments. I asked Mr Raja if this was something different for him too, and he said he had never done anything like this piece before. I don't know if anyone has. So I believe those of you looking forward to this are in for a great treat"

6.Argument:Ar.Rehman has put his guitarists/musicians name in the cover but Ilyaraja never put AR.Rehman ( then Dilip) when he sequenced Punnagai Mannan Theme Song"

My words: In those days a troup of MSV or Ilayaraja some time used more than 10 violins etc. Their troups are big. But A.R.Rehman uses synthesisers extensively. So he can give the name of his Bassist and percussionist and Flautist name. Any common people can understand that. It is not a crime!! Now A.R.Rehman says very elative words about Raja... ( After Roja's success.. he once said that he never listened to Ilayaraja!!"). Egoism is part of creative artists! Not a big issue!

7.Argument: Ilayaraja has lost his place

My words: He never looses HIS place. His fort is melody and he is still a Raja there. He is still people like Kamal Hasan, Fazil, Thangar Patchan, Bala are backing him up in their stuuffed movies. He is the numero uno in rerecording! Only the movies that suited to him are rare!n His hit list includes 1999 - Friends , Anthapuram ( Telugu ) - National Award Winner, 2000 - Bharathi , Kannukul Nilavu , Kochu Kochu Santoshangal ( Malayalam ), Hey Ram, 2001 - Azhagi , Kasi, Pithamagan etc.. No doubt.. a lot of talents now. But he is not outdated.

8.Argument: He could have spent his own money

My words: Expect Charu printing and distributes his Zero Degree Novel for free ( by saving his Tasmac Bill!!) ... and Manirathnam is planing to spend his earning to make his next movie for free to all since they have earned a lot all these years!

Bharathi said,"Sendriduveer ettu thickum Kalai Selvangal Yaavum Konarnthingu Saerpeer!" Ilayarajaa went to the west and brought back some new things to us. Kalai Selvangal like Oratorio.

Listen to Suriyan FM or anyother Tamil Radios: People are asking for Nizhalkal and Mounaragam, Priya... every week in the evening times. How many people are asking Chinna Chinna Asai ! Ilayaraja's music has life! Not a fading star like a comet... he is a Dhuruva Natchatram.

Theiveega Raagam... thevitatha Paadal... Kaetaale Pothum... still ringing in my ears. Thanks Mr Raja.. for giving as some of the soul arresting moments through your music. Raja..we want your music not your money!!

These Konal Writers should keep their (foul) mouth shut for some more time!!

With Love

To praise someone, we don't have to be at their level. But to criticize, we should atleast be their peers. I ask each one you, how many songs - no just phrases have you composed ?
We should be lucky to have such a prolific composer in our lifetime. Enjoy the beauty and ignore the bad thoughts that lead to foul mouths.

Honestly, until I can compose one song, I don't think I have the right to judge the composers. For that matter anyone.. I am not criticizing anyone of you either.

I think illyaraja needs more recognition in India. He is not well recognized in his own country ..and thats what hurts me and I feel bad about it. Had he been born in US or UK or any other nation, He would have won so many oscars and would have been a Global figure by now.
In Northern India, Not many people know about Illayaraja. I wish the Government or the fan club should do something to this Great Man with God Given Talents.

A song should have soul, more than life!! Because, life may pass away..but a Soul will never die. Likewise, time passes by, But Illayaraja's songs that has soul in it..will never die from our hearts.

How dare u can tell Gnani - a muttal in music? You stupid fellow!

He is a dictionary.

Excellent post! Very well thought out and valid points of view.

Ilayaraja made splendid music until the early 80s. Sangaththil Padatha Kavidhai from Auto Raja, is a clear example of how complex his bass progressions were. But, after the late 80s, his music has faded into lesser works.

In trying to talk in favor of Raja, why are you showing your hatred on A.R.R? If Suryan FM fans ask for lots of old Raja songs (mind you, none of those you mention are from the 90s are later), why do you bring Chinna Chinna Aasai into your explanation of why you think Raja is the greatest?

Well, you bring something like Suryan FMs' viewers choice to back up Raja's symphonical skills...perhaps you were in an excited frame of mind that you could think of nothing better to back your arguments on.

I do know of Raja's amazing composing skills, but like I said before, he is not at all at the same form he was in. Tiruvasagam is hardly Raja at his best.

Somehow I dont see Tiruvasagam being a good enough composition, when one gets to hear John Williams and James horner and earlier works from Ennio Morricone and Nino Rota!

My words: He is a great musician but not a great thinker. Sometimes he speaks too much.... forgive him!
Ilayaraja may not be a great thinker. Atleast you can try to be an average thinker. Good luck to you to improve your thinking skills!

..I am a Maharashtrian....trying to contribute little in music....but when i heared Ilayaraj's music ( it was abt 18 years back in 1989) something moved me and...unknowingly i started searching for his collection....lets leave the talent/contribution/form/ etc apart......i think whatever music he composes....takes me near God.........his music is so innocent...so raw...no gimics...no help of"sounds"....thats why i is supirior than others....

Any one from Tamil Nadu, and more so if he or she has spent the youth days from late 70s to mid-80s, would definitely know about IR. I am not here to say IR is a great musician blah blah...and all. All that I, a normal guy who has spent his youth during IR's hey days, can say is as follows:

a) IR was from a poor family and he had a very humble beginnning in the music industry.

b) IR is the first person to lift the status of a music director in the film industry. He is the first person to introduce classic in film songs. He is the first person to experiment with electronic/digital music but never really dependant on them.

c) Youth of those days would definitely be aware of the following comment made on IR: "Kamban veettu kattilum kavi paadum, IR veettu idili thattum isai paadum". His period is generally regarded as the golden period for tamil music.

d) I have regularly listened to many hindi songs ( and I can follow hindi lyrics) of SDB, RDB, LKP and others. These composers are really good and they have given very good songs in hindi. I also have a good collection of IRs songs. Believe me, one can hear continuously about 20 songs of IR and still find each song to be melodiously different to the other and yet soothing, soul stirring.

e) I would recommend (if you guys are not already aware) to listen to these few songs: (1) Engego sellum En ennangal (2) Yetho ninaivul kanavugal (3) Songs of Jaani (4) Ilamai enum poonkatru (4) Songs from Nizhalgal (5) The evergreen 'Senthazham poovil' from Mullum Malarum (6) The beutiful 'Mayilae Mayilaey un thogai engaey (7) Raja Raja Chozhan naan (8) Naan Thedum Chevanthi Poo (9) Aathadi Paavada Kaathada (10) Kannaey Kalai Maanae (11) Anthi varum naeram (12) Oh Vasantha Raaja (13) Poo vaadai kaatru

If you want to listen to songs scored with precision...then listen to (1) Padipula zero nadipula hero (2) Kaadoram lolakku

The above list is not exhaustive....I can add more songs but it take more space...All the above songs are evergreen.

When I listen to IR good songs, I feel that the instruments and the music is actually talking to me and conveying me the lyrics of the songs.

Hi freinds,

A minor clarification to my above comments. When I said IR is the first perston to introduce classic in film songs, what I meant was he was the first person to infuse classical form in the normal commercial filmy songs and made them popular.

Ilayaraaja is the best. There is no comparison with HIM.
Please don't compare the GENIUS with a sound engineer. Let Rahman continue with his cutting/mixing/pasting works.

Posted by: Rakesh.S | Sunday, July 13, 2008

IR is genious musician in the world, he still composing the movie is 40 and above in All south Language and hindi. so don't campare with child musicians(after IR period). he was reached high level in music and onwards, other musician in lower level at high level, they are not reach that position. they are composing only music without soul, that is hide in 3 or 6 months in Music world.

Either you are not blessed enough or you don't deserve to understand Ilaiyaraaja's Music, His words and His thoughts. I pity you. Even after Being a north Indian and staying in north
India i am blessed enough to enjoy His music which is Divine!

Listen to Suriyan FM or anyother Tamil Radios:..."How many people are asking Chinna Chinna Asai ! "

What a dumb argument? Suriyan FM listeners are not the ultimate judges of music. Just because they don't request a Rahman song doesn't make him inferior to Raja. World doesn't begin and end in TN dear. ARR rules India. That's right. He rules. With two Oscars, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA and several other international awards, he surely has gone places. Now, Raja hasn't got such recognition but that doesn't make him inferior to Rahman. He is a legend in his own right. The same way, ARR is great too, whether or not Suriyan FM listeners request his songs.

Actually, Santhosh has countered this stupid argument very well. Just because you want to praise Raja, why bring ARR down?

"Let Rahman continue with his cutting/mixing/pasting works."

Rakesh, you continue with your whinging while Rahman continues to win people's hearts across the globe. What do you know about music? To praise a musician, you don't need to know anything - if you enjoy some music, you praise the creator. But, to abuse a musician, you need to know something about music. Clearly, you know nothing about music and that is why you think Rahman is a sound engineer.

Indians are never appreciated in India. It was Attenborough who made the world sit up and recognise a man called Gandhi only after his film was released. All we Indians are stuck up with some terrible inferiority complex. Most of the comments here have appreciated IR but some of them are really sick. IR is a music composer a musician, ARR is an intelligent mixer very good at cutting and pasting. Ask him to compete in composing tunes with any music director of yesteryear and i bet he wont be able to dish out anything that is worthy. He takes close to a month to come out with one number. His Jai Ho and the other number were all rehashes of old hits.

Bob Dylan is very controversial these days, well I don't know much about him or his music. My favorite music is classical music, symphonies and all that stuff.

Wake up - These are some really funny facts that you have put up here. Maestro Dr.Ilaiyaraaja is undoubtedly the God of Music - A God to me indeed. And Thiruvasagam is OF COURSE A CROSS OVER in the world of Music Dom. He is one rare breed in the musical arena.

Just cas you write some bulshit on your blog doesnt mean that these facts are universally accepted.

Please dissolve this blog. You are too childish, immatured and insane to have a blog for yourself. And the comical thing is that I see you are a journalist, activist, etc etc etc. So funny man.

U can make up a good comedy piece of yourself.
